"The Next Best Thing", en Latinoamèrica: "Una Pareja Casi Perfecta", es una comedia-drama realizada en 2000, dirigida por John Schlesinger y protagonizada por Rupert Everett, Madonna y Benjamin Bratt. Abbie, interpretada por Madonna, y Robert, interpretado por Rupert Everett, son muy buenos amigos y formarían la pareja ideal si no fuera porque Robert es gay. Una noche de fiesta se acuestan juntos y ella queda embarazada. Abbie y Robert deciden afrontar esta nueva situación compartiendo hogar como una familia, pero sin unirse sentimentalmente. Esta manera tan particular de ser padres les va muy bien hasta que su hijo cumple seis años. Es entonces cuando Abbie empieza a salir con un hombre. Para Robert esto supone una intrusión en sus vidas. Abbie decide mudarse y llevarse el pequeño niño, pero es entonces cuando la batalla de la tenencia comienza a enfrentarlos.Ya nada volverá a ser como antes.
Madonna grabò dos canciones como parte del soundtrack original para la pelìcula: "American Pie" y "Time Stood Still", pero solamente "American Pie" fue lanzado como single y màs tarde incluìdo en el àlbum "Music".

The film is about two best friends, one a straight woman, Abbie (Madonna), the other a gay man, Robert (Rupert Everett), who accidentally have a child together. Five years later, Abbie falls in love with a straight man (Bratt) and wants to move away with him and Robert's little boy, Sam. A nasty, full-of-surprises custody battle ensues between Abbie and Robert. Madonna recorded two song as part of the original soundtrack for the movie: "American Pie" y "Time Stood Still", but only "American Pie" was released as a single and then included in her "Music" album.
